Your guide to BASE Library

What is is a catalogue providing details of the collections of 20 NHS libraries across Birmingham, the Black Country and Solihull, collectively known as BASE. The libraries are home to over 85 000 books (printed and electronic), as well as DVDs, audio items and printed journals.

How to Search the BASE Library Catalogue

The catalogue can be found at, or follow the link from the library website at Start your search by clicking ‘Catalogue’ at the top of the page, and enter your search terms into the main search box.

This could be a title or subject, for example ‘rheumatology’, or you can use the drop–down menu to search in specific fields, like Title or Author.

The results will show if any items are available for loan. In the left hand column there are links to help you refine your search by library and author, or limit your search to show only currently available items.

To place a hold on an item, click ‘Reserve’ and log into your BASE library account. Your library will notify you when the item is available to collect.

Advanced Search

This gives you a wider range of search options.

If you are looking for a specific format, e.g. a DVD, this can be selected on the Item Type tab.

You can narrow your search to a particular library by selecting the library on the ‘Locations and Availability’ drop-down menu.

If you want to limit your search to items only published in certain year(s) type the year into the ‘Publication Date Range’ box, or type “2011-” for example, to find items published after a certain year.

Your BASE Library Account

Your library account lets you reserve and renew items, view details of your current loans and borrowing history, and amend your contact details online. You can renew items twice online before they need to be returned to the library.

To access, select the ‘My Account’ tab and enter the number from your BASE Library card into the ‘Login’ box, and your password [default: 1111] into the ‘Password’ box.  You must change your password after logging in to BASE Library for the first time.

You can also use your account to make book suggestions for titles you would like the library to consider purchasing. The library welcomes suggestions from users for titles which will improve its collection and support patient care
