How to Register for Athens Enabling on-line access to resources via NHS Evidence

Why Register for Athens

Athens accounts are for staff of ALL disciplines and students on placement. Resources include healthcare databases, image database, full-text e-journals, BNF, e-books, and much more from Local and National resources.

If you have both Trust and current academic status, you are entitled to hold parallel HE & NHS Athens accounts. The range of resources will be different. Therefore It is worthwhile having both if you are entitled to them.

How do I Register

You can self-register for an Athens account either using your work or home PC. If you register from inside the NHS you will get immediate access (if you register on a non-trust PC access can take up to 15 days).

To register follow these steps:

• Register at http://www.library.nhs.uk.

• Go to the WHY REGISTER box on the left of your screen and select Register for NHS Athens link.

• This will take you to the NHS England Athens registration page where you will find 3 sections to fill in:

Section one: Your NHS Trust/Organisation details

You can find your trust/organisation details either by keyword or by selecting your region/area from the drop down menus. If you are unsure which region or area your organisation is in you can check by selecting Find NHS Trust/Organisation by region/area.

Section Two: Your personal details

Enter in your personal details: Where it asks for email address it is best to use your NHS work email as it will enable immediate access as some personal email accounts may be blocked by individual trusts.

Section Three: Your professional details

Enter your professional details. Once completed read through the terms and conditions by clicking on the link marked ‘terms and conditions’: If you are happy with the terms, tick the box and submit.

After submitting your details a page will be displayed showing you your Username. You will then receive an email asking you to activate the account, this email will contain a link that you need to follow. This link will take you through to an activation webpage, follow the online instructions including choosing a password.

You must follow this link in order to complete the registration process and you will have a limited time in which to do so.

What should I do if I have forgotten my password?

You can reset your password be using the link below however, you must use a Trust computer to do this. https://register.athensams.net/nhs/forgotten_password.php

What should I do if I have forgotten both my username and password?

Contact the Athens Administrator at your ‘home’ library.

Why do I need to update my account when I change organisation?

Resources can differ between Trusts as each Trust may/can purchase some local resources that you may want to use.

When you change organisations you will need to update your details.

To do this login to your Athens account and click on My Account. Then click on Change your organisation. You will then need to complete the on-line registration form, after completion you will be sent an activation code via email.
