Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of malnutrition and risk of malnutrition of patients with acute stroke during the first 10 days of hospitalization. Our study shows that the prevalence of malnutrition and risk of malnutrition in patients with acute stroke increases strongly during the first 10 days of admission. Therefore, screening of the nutritional status of these patients throughout this period is highly recommended to enable timely nutritional intervention and nutritional management of these patients.

Their organization addressed these issues by developing Silver Spoons, a program in which framed volunteers assist compromised patients with their meals. Volunteer services' goal is to have Silver Spoons volunteers available during the busiest times of day -- usually at breakfast and lunch.

The new and inclusive term protein-energy wasting (PEW) refers to a systematically defined condition based on certain criteria and reflects malnutrition and wasting caused not only by inadequate nutrient intake but also by depletion resulting from the inflammatory and noninflammatory conditions that prevail in this population.

Abstract: Undernutrition and insufficient energy and protein intake is a common problem in hospitalised patients. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate whether a novel hospital menu would be an effective strategy for increasing nutritional intake in patients at nutritional risk.

Abstract: Glutamine supplementation has been associated with reduced mortality, infections and hospital length of stay in critically ill patients and patients undergoing major surgery. Parenteral glutamine supplementation in severely ill patients may reduce infections, length of stay and mortality, but substantial uncertainty remains. Unlike previous meta-analyses, we could not demonstrate a significant reduction in mortality.

In 2005, the South African Department of Health implemented the World Health Organization Ten Step programme for the inpatient treatment of SAM. Abstract: Majority of the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) nutrition guidance recommendations were based on Grade D evidence due to absence of randomised controlled trials. The aim was to assess outcomes of parenteral nutrition (PN) administration when the guidance was adhered to. Compliance with the nutritional guidance in the UK was not enough to improve outcomes in patients requiring PN in our cohort. Evidence based changes to PN practice are required to optimise care.

Abstract: Stroke produces many effects that impact eating. Nutrition is fundamental for recovery and rehabilitation, but the nursing nutritional role and associated outcomes have not been delineated. This review indicated the parameters of nursing nutritional care, and provided a framework for future research. A functional, supportive, and educational nursing nutritional role was described but little evidence was of sufficient quality to support policy and practice development or inform education. Nutritional care was revealed as an essential but under-recognized element of stroke nursing.
