The NHS subscribes to key healthcare databases, full text journals, e-books and more for its staff. To access these you need to have an Athens username and password. You can obtain one by self-registering at:

BMJ Case Reports

Clinically important common or rare conditions. Browse recent cases by specialty, or locate videos and images. Access via Athens.

British Society of Gastroenterology

Includes a Members-only area with a directory of members, discussion forum and more. Includes access to guidelines, a research database and case reports.

Clinical Key

Clinical Key enables searching from a single platform across eBooks, eJournals, procedural videos, drug information, patient information and images. Access via Athens.

Cochrane Collaboration Group

Produces systematic reviews of evidence in areas of gastroenterology- upper gastrointestinal and pancreatic diseases, hepatobiliary, colorectal cancer and IBD.


Provides current, evidence-based information to support decision making at the point of care. Access via Athens.

Free site, requires registration.  Contains current awareness, and has links to the major Gastroenterology journals. Also has a section on lectures, a slide atlas, and video clips.

Gastro Training is an educational site with resources for gastroenterology professionals.

Medscape Gastroenterology

A US website with a broad scope of resources, has sections on IBD, IBS, Hepatitis B and C, GERD etc. Requires registration for access to some resources, including news.

National Digestive Diseases Clearinghouse

A US National Institute of Health (NIH) site, which contains links to statistics, current clinical trials and practice guidelines.
